Convert Video Format
Turn a file into the format that will actually play.
Format problems are usually container problems. An MKV that a TV refuses, a MOV that Windows won't preview, a recording a website rejects — the video inside is often fine, it's the wrapper and codec combination that isn't supported.
Convert to MP4 with H.264 and it will play essentially everywhere. Convert to WebM with VP9 when you need something for the open web. The same resolution, frame rate and audio controls as the compressor are here too, so you can change format and size in one pass — all on your own machine.
How to use it
- 01Drop in the video you need converted.
- 02Pick the output format and codec — MP4 with H.264 is the safe universal choice.
- 03Adjust quality, resolution and audio if you need to.
- 04Convert and download the result.
Frequently asked questions
What should I convert to for maximum compatibility?
MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio. That combination plays on every phone, browser, TV and editor released in the last decade.
Does converting reduce quality?
Yes, slightly — re-encoding is lossy, so a converted file is always a generation removed from the original. At the Maximum or High settings the difference is very hard to see. Always convert from the original rather than from a previous conversion.
Which input formats are supported?
MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, and audio containers like MP3 and WAV. AVI and some older formats can't be read in the browser — converting those first with a desktop tool is the way round it.
Why isn't every format offered as an output?
Codecs and containers aren't freely interchangeable: VP9 belongs in WebM or MKV, not MP4. The format list updates to match the codec you pick, so you can't accidentally produce a file nothing will open.
