Duplicate File Finder

Drop in a batch of files to find exact duplicates — everything happens in your browser.

Files are hashed locally with SHA-256 in your browser — nothing is uploaded.

This tool checks a batch of files for exact duplicates by computing a SHA-256 hash of each one — a short fingerprint that's identical only when the file contents are byte-for-byte identical, regardless of the file name. Two files with different names but the same content will be grouped together; two files with the same name but different content won't.

Everything runs locally using your browser's built-in Web Crypto API. Files are read into memory to compute the hash and are never sent anywhere — close the tab and nothing remains.

How to use it

  1. 01Drag a batch of files into the drop zone, or click it to browse and select files.
  2. 02Wait for hashing to finish — larger files and larger batches take a little longer.
  3. 03Review the duplicate groups: each group is a set of files with identical content.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Hashing happens entirely in your browser using the Web Crypto API. Files never leave your device.

Why didn't it catch files that look the same?

This tool finds exact duplicates only — files with byte-for-byte identical content. Two photos that look alike but were re-exported, resized or re-compressed will have different bytes and different hashes, so they won't be grouped as duplicates.

Can I check a whole folder, or files already in the cloud?

This tool works on files you select from your device, one batch at a time. Purgify does the same duplicate detection automatically across your connected cloud accounts — Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox and more — without you having to download anything first.
