Add Page Numbers To A PDF

Number a document that arrived without any.

Merged documents, scanned bundles and exported reports routinely arrive with no page numbers, which makes them awkward to reference in a meeting or a filing. Adding numbers afterwards is usually a five-minute job in expensive software.

Choose a format, a corner and a starting number. Skip a cover page by telling the tool which page to start numbering from, and offset the count if the document is one part of something larger.

How to use it

  1. 01Drop in the PDF.
  2. 02Pick a format: a plain number, 1 / 10, or Page 1 of 10.
  3. 03Choose the corner, font size and margin.
  4. 04Set which page to start numbering from — useful for skipping a cover — then apply and download.

Frequently asked questions

Can I skip the cover page?

Yes. Set “first page to number” to 2 and the cover is left alone. You can also set the starting number independently, so page 2 of the file can be numbered 1.

Will the numbers overlap my content?

They can, if the page already has content in that corner. Increase the margin or move the number to a different corner — the change is not destructive, so try again on the original if needed.

Are existing page numbers replaced?

No. Numbers already printed into the pages are part of the page content and stay where they are; this adds a new number on top. Crop or use a different corner if they clash.
